RIP Joan Rivers

As I’m sure you all have heard, Joan Rivers, a comedy legend and fashion icon, has passed away today at the age of 81. The fact that Joan was able to become a successful and well-respected female comedian in the 1950’s, well before the second wave of feminism, is absolutely extraordinary. Every female comedian since- Tina Fey, Sarah Silverman, Kristen Wiig- is beholden to the hard work and tenacity of Joan Rivers.

I had the pleasure of seeing Joan Rivers perform live at The Laurie Beechman Theatre two months ago, and remember thinking that I don’t have half of her energy at 21 years old, and she was exactly sixty years older than me. Joan will be remembered forever for her no-holds-barred humor, perseverance, and of course impeccable style.

Layer it Up

This fashion season is all about layering different textures of clothing. After all, there’s no better way to beat the cold weather than piling on all the leather, denim, and scarves you own! Today I put a flannel shirt underneath a cashmere sweater and voila- warmth and style all in one. Have fun mixing and matching different items of clothing to see what works. Serengetee

I recently found out about an awesome new company called Serengetee from Emory rep Nicole Goldberg that just had to be featured on Lace it Up! It is a company that was founded in 2012 by a group of college friends from Claremont McKenna College in California while traveling the world on Semester at Sea. They have collectively toured marketplaces in over 30 countries and were especially captivated by the global fabric patterns they found along the way. Their mission is to connect people to the globe through fabric while giving back to the communities that inspire and create their designs. When you wear Serengetee, you ‘Wear the World’.

Serengetee’s Headliner Campaign features a new charity each week and $10 of each sale of their ‘Fabric of the Week’ goes directly to that charity.

High Holidays, High Fashion

Shanah Tova to my fellow Jews! As we head off to our respective services, family dinners, and break-fasts this season many of us will wonder how to dress conservatively for the high holidays but also stay trendy. Fear not- it is possible to look classy and cool!

Who cares that it’s Fall? Dress in bright, bold colors to make a statement. You can also have fun with your shoes and accessories to make even the most boring outfit seem fun and fashionable. Pair your outfit with a cute bag and you will look both ready to meet a nice Jewish boy’s parents, and grace the pages of Teen Vogue. Use my roomie Margaux’s chic outfit for chabad as inspiration!

We are the chosen people for a reason, dress the part!

Fashion Week Favs

It feels weird to be writing about Fall fashion considering I’m in Atlanta and it’s still BURNING hot out, but I guess I should probably comment on New York Fashion Week.

After stalking the internet to see what I can look forward to wearing in, um, months- I was pleasantly surprised at all of the florals and bright colors I was seeing. It looks like Spring is coming reallllly early this year. Another thing I was delighted to see was fur, fur, and more fur! After seeing all of the colorful fur vests and jackets on the runway (particularly a pale pink Oscar de la Renta fur vest that I would die for) I feel confident that I will be trendy rather than drag-queen-like this season.

Pieces with a lot of texture such as feathery skirts (my favorite was an Alice + Olivia Feather-Skirt dress) and tons of leather jackets were also pleasant surprises. The only trend I am seeing over and over that does not necessarily please me are lots of hats (I am not a hat person). But I have a feeling those might not start appearing until Winter, so I am safe for now. What were your favorite parts of Fashion Week this year?

Friday Fashion: Preppy & Chic

Some of us love to dress preppy, but run the risk of looking old and boring. There are a couple easy tips for how to edge up your inner Charlotte York inspired by my new best twitter friend’s fashion, Liz Margulies’ of Gallery Girls (Bravo, Mondays, 10/9 c). I snagged some pics off of Liz’s Instagram (@LizMargulies) to show you how to be preppy AND chic.

Liz wears a hot pink skirt with her classic black and white collared shirt to edge up her outfit and keep it looking young and fresh. Infusing pops of bright, neon colors into your wardrobe is an easy way to stay fashion forward.

Adding a pop of color isn’t the only way to make a preppy outfit more trendy- here Liz adds texture with the leather on her skirt to give this ensemble some flare. Her studded clutch also gives the outfit a rocker touch.

A collared shirt with polka dots might sound too preppy and girly, but the fact that it is see through with a cami underneath keeps it current and risqué. Again, Liz adds a studded clutch which edges up her outfit even more.

Featured Fashionista: Liz

I normally wouldn’t make two similarly themed posts two days in a row, but in honor of tonight’s new ep of Gallery Girls (Bravo, 10/9 c) I decided to feature another fashionista I admire: Liz Margulies! Liz might seem like your typical New York betch, but her style is totally unique. Her look is very New York meets LA, because she combines classy and girly pieces with edgier, more bad-ass accessories. Her tattoos and piercings combined with a tight ballerina bun? Magic. She also works the big sunglasses like it’s nobody’s business. Here are some of my favorite looks by Liz, but you can always tune in and see for yourself on Gallery Girls!

Featured Fashionista: Allie

When I decided to start doing posts featuring fashionistas that I admire, the first person that came to mind was my beautiful, successful, smart, and amazing cousin (basically older sis) Allie Lewbel! Allie is my biggest role model in general, but is also the person who inspired me to start loving fashion. I used to dress like a hippie granola girl until Allie basically told me to stop and be normal (LOL). The number one word I would use to describe her is a trendsetter, because everything she wears becomes popular months after she already started wearing it. A Woman’s Right to Studded Shoes

Carrie Bradshaw once protested for a woman’s right to shoes- and I couldn’t agree more. My current obsession is anything and everything with studs, so here is some studded footwear I can’t get enough of!

My Sam Edelman studded loafers can be worn with anything and in any season. I wear them in the summer with shorts and a tee, and in the winter with skinny jeans and a sweater. They come in black as well, and are a definite staple in my wardrobe.

I just purchased these Jeffrey Campbell spiked lita platform boots and can stare at them all day long. I haven’t gotten a chance to wear them yet, but I can’t wait to return to Emory and be rocker chic with these beauties! Statement pieces like this are a great way to edge up any outfit.

While technically the Summer is over soon, down in Hotlanta the hot weather continues into the Fall. These breezy, Sam Edelman studded gladiator sandals are great for beating the heat, and the gold studs make them trendy and cool.

Thanks to Sam and Jeffrey we can stud it up all year long!
